Fajar Hidayah Foundation intends to upgrade and expand educational services to the community in the formal education program for youths in the primary and high school age category by constructing new school buildings with adequate facility and efficient management. The Indonesian Educational System still adopts the massive educational system which cannot accommodate individual differences in talents, desire, and ability. Realizing the imbalance of educational demands in the present system, The Foundation developed an Islamic School with integrated curriculum as an institution in building and progressing the up coming generation. Fajar Hidayah Foundation was founded by Mr. H. Mirdas Eka Yora and Mrs. Hj. Draga Rangkuti on 13 August 1998. In 2005 Fajar Hidayah Foundation established Fajar Hidayah Integrated Islamic Boarding School in Aceh which to date has around 500 students, 40 teachers and staffs in a 10.000m2 school buildings standing on 2 Ha lands. 80% of construction aided by the Singaporean International Foundation, on Jan 2007, Fajar Hidayah completed the construction of its own free boarding school on a 2 hectare compound with more than 10,000 m2 of building space in its first stage of development, inclusive of a dormitory, multifunction hall, training center and information center. During the 2004 Tsunami and earth quake that devastated Aceh, the foundation was highlighted on the plight of over 140 orphans (between the age of 6 – 18 years old) it temporarily sheltered at a borrowed dormitory room, and another 120 casualties (below 5 years old) at another school it set up in, just outside Banda Aceh using an abandoned building. Many more orphans waited in queue to attend the Fajar Hidayah orphanage-boarding school, then using temporary shelter.
The orphans were cared for by 10 teachers/mentors from Fajar Hidayah Foundation of Jakarta. The pain and destruction around compelled the teachers to persevere in providing care and watch over the orphans’ welfare. From the 1st week immediately after the disaster, Fajar Hidayah had sent relief teams to remote villages, refugee camps and barracks. Taking in the living conditions and emotional trauma that relatives of the orphans were in, Fajar Hidayah urged the establishment of a permanent boarding school for the orphans.
At the temporary building the orphans occupied an area of 200 m2 on the second floor of one of the school buildings it borrowed. It was within those walls, the orphans played, eat, slept and studied. Despite the cramp quarters, the orphans strived to get back to a live of normalcy without their parents. A year passed and the orphans had another year to stay at the venue. Meanwhile, the patrons of Fajar Hidayah struggled to find a way to build a permanent boarding school for orphans. The ultimate goal is to build a self-sufficient complex with training facilities and guests apartments that would allow the Foundation to embark on income-generating activities such as conducted courses & conferences as well as renting out guests apartments. The income generated would be ploughed back for the operational and maintenance costs of the orphanage and school complex. Just six months before the end of the tenure of the borrowed premises, taking into account the efforts and sustainability program designed by Fajar Hidayah, with out being asked, Singapore International Foundation offered to participate in funding 80% of the planned construction. In January 2007, the construction of the new complex costing more than SGD 5.000.000 was finally completed with the children occupying their new home. A self sufficient Fajar Hidayah boarding school is now home and school to more than 250 students, and hosting a government program to train more than 50.000 Acehnese teachers. On the 11th of May, 2006 a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between Yayasan Fajar Hidayah, Singapore International Foundation, and the Local Government of Nangroe Aceh Darusalam to build a new school and boarding compleks in Aceh. It has been an anticipated event for the past month for the children in SITB Fajar Hidayah Aceh, and the community as a whole. In the signing of the MOU, H.Mirdas Eka Yora Lc representing for Yayasan Fajar Hidayah, Mr. Joseph Liem representing for Singapore International Foundation, and Mr. Syaifudin Abdurrahman representing for the Local Government of Nangroe Aceh Darusalam. Also present is Drs. H.A Msdjid AR. MM. to witness and as Bupati Aceh Besar. The building of the Fajar Hidayah complex sits on a 2 hactres land in Cot Meuraya, Kuta Baro, Blang Bintang Aceh Besar, which in its first stage can accomodate for 300 children. This establishment will raise the quality of eduction, and will give the opportunity for orphans to contribute in shaping the future for Aceh. The children from the boarding school is now filled with joyous humility from the news they will have a new school and boarding facilities in the very near future. The children and the teachers of SITB Fajar Hidayah give thanks to God for the kindness bestowed on them through Yayasan Fajar Hidayah, Singapore International Foundation, and Local Government of Nangroe Aceh Darusalam. “Alhamdulillah”(praise be to God).
